When you make assumptions and think you know what people are saying, in effect you stop listening.
When you stop listening, you create resistance and people go away. This can be frustrating for you and the
prospect, a conversation that could take 10 minutes can turn into an hour long event. The real flaw here is that
a lot of people have terrible listening skills. Sometimes we hear only what we want to hear and when that happens the conversation
drifts into the oppisite direction of why you called them or why they called you. Here are a few problem areas you may want to work on.
. Telling people what you think they need to know instead of telling them what they need to hear.
. Responding to people based on what you thought they meant or assuming you know what they are saying.
. You have an agenda based on your own needs.
It took me awhile to figure out that I was making assumptions and responding to what I thought people meant. What people say can be very different
from what they mean. The key is to listen to what they mean as well as whats being said. Its been my experience that when I take that approach, we're both
happy and get something from it. I had to train myself to think differently and to rely more on communication skills than technique and to treat people with
respect by understanding the meaning behind what they are saying before responding. I had to do away with all the techniques, systems and gimmicks and change the
way I think, and the way I act on what I think.
